The largest city in South Africa and the capital of the Northern Cape is Kimberley. The town, which was established during the late 1800s diamond boom, has preserved much of its past and is well-known for being the location of the Big Hole, an eight football field-sized diamond mine that was dug by hand.
As the principal tourist destination in the Northern Cape, Kimberley is today a thriving, contemporary city with a wide variety of tourist attractions, including shopping centers, art galleries, restaurants, museums, and a legal casino. If you're interested in the history of the Anglo-Boer War, the Magersfontein battlefield and museum is also not far from Kimberley.
